It Starts In Our Schools

ART DIRECTION / ADVERTISING / MOTION DESIGN

The School to Prison Pipeline has funneled children out of safe public school environments and into the hands of the justice system. These commercials shed light on the injustices many students of color are forced into.

How Does This Happen?

Zero tolerance policies were first introduced in 1994 by New York City’s Mayor Giuliani. These policies created a firm stance on crime and deviance, but supported racial biases through unreasonably harsh penalties for minor disruptions previously taken care of in the classroom.

Who is Effected?

Black students are 3x more likely to be expelled and pushed into the judicial system than their white peers.

Students with learning disabilities such as ADHD are at a higher risk of being suspended or expelled as well.

The Result?

Students who are expelled or suspended for more than 10 days are 7x more likely to not graduate.

Not graduating increases the probability that students experience poverty, poor health, and time spent in the criminal justice system.
